An aquascaper's dream, the water garden typically contains a variety of aquatic plants and quite possibly a few goldfish.
Water gardens in moderate
climates need an area of the pond to be at least 2 feet deep, so that the pond doesn't freeze entirely
from top to bottom - remember, your fish need the water to survive the winter. Colder climates require
more depth, enough to provide at least 12" to 16" of water below the freeze zone.

Koi are incredibly beautiful fish, but a koi pond is different from
a water garden. Koi eat plants, which means additional care for your aquatic vegetation. A koi pond must
also be larger - koi get quite large regardless of the size of the pond. We recommend that your koi pond
be at least 1000 gallons in volume, but bigger is definitely better. It also needs to have an area of the
pond at least 3 feet deep, although we recommend 4 to 5 feet.
Since we can't give you all the answers in the space on this page, we strongly recommended that you research koi if you are interested in this type of pond. A lot of folks would love a water feature in their yard, but just don't have
the space - or the time - for a pond. The pondless waterfall is an attractive option. It offers all the
beauty of a pond, without all of a pond's maintenance and upkeep.
Imagine a beautifully landscaped stream, fed by a waterfall. Until now, this stream would have led to a pond. However, this stream just disappears right into the ground, blending into your landscaping with no standing water. Ponds need to run 24 hours a day to maintain water clarity, but a pondless waterfall runs only when you want to enjoy it. So compared to a pond, it uses only a fraction of the electricity and water - and without the potential liability of having an unfenced pond, you now have an attractive option to beautify your front yard. Talk about curbside appeal! Play the video on the left to see an incredibly diverse selection of pondless waterfalls. Who knows, it may even help inspire a design idea or two for you! As you choose your pond type, don't forget to check on the requirements of your local zoning ordinances. The size and depth of the koi pond you're envisioning may require a safety fence - or maybe not. Either way, it's better to know before you start excavation. |
